When the call comes in, Officer Ramon shouts, “Kennel up boy!” Hearing his masters command, Jango jumps swiftly into the cargo area of the K9 police SUV, ready and excited to fulfill the job he’s been trained to do. Only a select few officers have the privilege to partner up with these highly trained furry friends. Officer Ramon and Jango just finished their intense K9 Basic Training, and are ready to hit the streets.
Of all a dog's senses, smell is the most highly developed and Jango can sniff out all sorts of smells that human noses miss. When Ramon gives Jango a scent article like a ball cap or a glove, it yields a wealth of information that we, as people, could never decode no matter how deeply we pressed our nosed to it. But to a German Shepard’s snout, a tiny whiff gives Jango all the clues he needs to find the scented trail and track down the suspect.
Even though Ramon and Jango are new to the beat, they've already had a big bust. Jango trapped the notorious jewel thief “Sir Walter,” up a tree across from the museum. Officer Ramon cuffed the burglar, and headed back to the station, where Jango of course got his favorite doggie treat, a delicious milk bone, Yum! Job well done, Jango . . . good boy!
